Getting over Betrayal Elegantly

In recent years, I’ve had a couple of incidents where I felt extremely betrayed and going through that period of my life was quite tough. I had to deal with my turbulent emotions, hurt and it spilled over into my personal life when I was interacting with family and friends who loved me. I wasn’t myself and it affected my moods and how I behaved and it definitely affected my level of happiness. I tried to be strong, and by strong, I mean pushing my emotions aside or started talking and b***ching about it wherever I go and whoever could listen. That also brought out unhappy and awkward situations because maybe the listening friend or family member weren’t saying something…

Japanese Elegance

An Japanese doll I found in Anime shops, I thought she is so beautiful. I was fortunate enough to meet and live with a traditional Japanese family in Tokyo, who can speak a reasonable amount of good english. It is a family of highly educated professors of Science and Biology, so you can definitely count on a group of very interesting people. Japanese women are definitely an elegant lot. It is winter here and despite the cold, the ladies get pretty dressed up in beautiful coats and boots. One thing I’ve noticed is that men and women are very distinct from each other. In some countries, men and women dress alike. If you have a view of a crowd of…

Unequal Childhoods – Class, Race and Family Life

Good morning from Tokyo! For some reason, I got up extra early this morning which is very different from yesterday, when I could barely drag myself out of bed! I’m not sure if it is jet lag, because it was inconsistent. It was too early for breakfast so I spent the next hour or so lying in bed, thinking and reflecting. I thought about the book I had finished yesterday, Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life and how it clashes with a previous book I read Einstein Never Used Flashcards: How Our Children Really Learn–and Why They Need to Play More and Memorize Less and also how is it relevant to these books that I also read The Well-Trained Mind:…

Favorite Passages from Classic, “Out of Africa”

What I love about some classic books is the beauty of their play with words, a glimpse into the past and culture and the ability to relate to the same hopes, fears and dreams. They are the reasons why I read some books over and over again. Some of my favourite passages from Out of Africa “But a coffee-plantation is a thing that gets hold of you and does not let you go, and there is always something to do on it: you are generally just a little behind you work.” (pg 16) Sounds like my curious job of building websites. “Out in the wilds I had learned to beware of abrupt movements. The creatures with which you are dealing…

White Teeth For a Beautiful Elegant Smile

I’ve recently gotten my teeth whitened. And I’m extremely pleased with the results. I wish I had done it earlier! There were two reasons why I had resisted. 1. When I was about 7, my dentist told me that I should never try those teeth whitening products because my teeth are naturally creamy. I remembered that vividly. 2. It was so expensive! It was about $2000 at the time I enquired three years ago. Through a great deal that I had found on Groupon, I’ve managed to get my teeth whitened professionally at $350. True enough, the teeth professionals weren’t able to get my teeth to a pure lightning white, but it was as close to the best white as…

Updating Your Grooming … and How to Look Expensive

Currently reading: It’s awesome! Not many people know this but years ago, I worked in a fashion magazine, as an fashion and beauty’s editorial assistant. I didn’t know much about grooming and I hardly wore any make up. Imagine that! Going to work in a fashion magazine, not really knowing how to dress or put on make up! Anyway, it was during that period of time I had learned the most, not just about fashion and beauty but about presenting myself, socializing and working with people. At the magazine house, I felt like I was a kid in a candy store. There were rows and rows of beauty products, designer clothes and shoes, home decor, art etc. I was constantly…

Classy Conversations

I recently met someone whom I’ve admired for a very long time. I had great respect for him and his work. I thought he was a star. So when the opportunity came for me to meet him, I was excited and nervous. To my surprise, we became friends! However after some niceties and over several cups of coffee, I had an inkling feeling that that was all to him. Worse still, I started to get disturbed and annoyed by some of his comments. They bordered on tastelessness and inappropriateness. This is another lesson for those who have lots of money. Money DOES NOT BUY CLASS. I put up with it by initially laughing it off, then making polite half-smiles to…

Conversational Blunders

The secret of success in conversation is to be able to disagree without being disagreeable. – unknown. I updated one of my favourite pages on The Art of Conversation. Though it can be a serious subject, I find it hilarious reading it again because it reminds me of people I love. We are all not perfect, and we make these mistakes from time to time. I’m sure beneath all their conversational blunders, they are either caring for us or voicing out an insecurity that we can squash by some loving reassurance, appreciation and much needed admiration and attention. From The Art of Conversation on Elegantwoman.org,   I’m sure we are all familiar with these conversational blunderers. The Bragger The…

A Beautiful & Elegant Countenance

“Countenance” is defined as a “a person’s face or facial expression”. Not everyone is born with great looks, but everyone can control their ‘countenance’ more than they realize. What does that mean? Try people watching. Watch the expressions of people walking down the street, at the restaurant, waiting for the train. Make a subtle observation of people at the party. You can instantly tell who is confident, shy, awkward, warm and friendly, cold and distant, uninterested, too eager etc. Even if you hadn’t been observing before, your subconsciousness takes in the ‘countenance’ of the person you are interacting with. Sometimes, you feel warm and welcomed. Other times, you feel an invisible barrier. Their tight smiles, icy stares or insecurity are…
