From Emma, UK My reply: "I'm fourteen and I'd like to be elegant, but I don't want to seem too old by the way I dress. How do you think I can have an elegant style while still incorporating younger, newer styles?" - Allison, USA Dear Allison,

First of all, congratulations on being conscious to be elegant! Most teenagers your age are at the self-expressive mode which may sometimes not be the most elegant.

In general, the guidelines for being elegant are the same throughout the ages. You can apply the same rules and principles at any stage in life to achieve an elegant look. I have written about some of it here https://elegantwoman.org/timeless.html and https://elegantwoman.org/timeless-style.html

So as not to look "too old", its more the issue of whether an article of clothing (such as jeans, sneakers, knee-high socks) or clothes made of a certain type of material (velvet, denim) that may not be suitable for one's age. Just to show an example, I don't think older women should be wearing too many t-shirts and jeans or have their skirts a little short. Younger girls should not be wearing high stiletto heels, too much make up, too many accessories. Older women should not be wearing denim material and younger girls should not be wearing too much see-through material, silk, lace or glittering fabric.

For a girl your age, little t-shirts, jeans, knee-high socks is alright if kept in good taste and not showing too much skin at any one time, although preferably, the more feminine, the more elegant. (jeans and t-shirts aren't exactly the most feminine). Opt for the fresh look, not to have too much skin exposed, or have too much glitter, or accessories, dangling from one's ears to one's arm.

I think staying away from harsh colours such as black, dark grey, dark brown or dark red in most cases in order to avoid looking too old. Bright or pastel colours are wonderful.

To be an elegant fourteen year old, I would recommend wearing cotton dresses, simple in style but of good shape. A girl embracing her femininity is somewhat the most elegant of them all. Note how elegant girls are always in some form of a dress or skirt. Not too much jewelry, keep it simple and almost no make up or none at all with a bit of lip gloss. Girls can look tastefully beautiful having their hair combed and held by a ponytail or a hair band. For casual wear, little polo tees with skirts are pleasant and in some cases, preppy.

A few younger movie stars or from television shows that are quite elegant are: Blair Waldorf from Gossip girl, Marisa Cooper & Taylor Townsend from the O.C.

I don't recommend you follow teen-vogue or similar magazines too much. While they have many beautiful fashionable clothing ensembles, many of those are not really elegant. There is too much dark colours, goth make up, overly glittered, or too mature styles for the young fresh faced models in the magazines.

In summary, elegance is achieved by keeping it clean, neat and simple. With all that said, I think its best to find a style you are the most comfortable in and what you like the most and the elegant part will come naturally. :) All the best and take care!

Warm regards, Eunice
