Can a wedding couple dictate who an invited person may or may not bring along as their guest?

Here is my problem: My nephew is getting married soon. My spouse and I are separated but talking...trying to work things out between us. My spouse was invited to the wedding of his nephew along with a 'guest'. He would like to bring me as his guest but his nephew said no...that it would be uncomfortable for him. No further explanation.

I'm not sure why as I've known him all his life and we've always been on good terms...no problems whatsoever. I'm rather hurt that he feels this way. Should my husband bring me along anyway or tell me to remain behind? I don't want to rock the boat but can't help feeling sad.

There are several conventions in play here.

Married couples are always invited as a social unit (the exception being when the activity is "girls' night" or some other gender-exclusive gathering). If you and your spouse are not only still married but actively trying to repair any questions on this front, no one can reasonably demand that one come and not the other.

"And Guest" is full of its own pitfalls. Since the nephew used it on the invitation, he cannot now claim that the wife of the invited is an unsuitable guest. By using "and guest" instead of naming who he wished to invite, he has lost any veto powers over your uncle's decision.
