If the person invited you there should be no problem calling or sending a quick email. Simply say that you have dietary restrictions and would like to come to the event and ask if they would prefer you to bring something or would like more information so they can prepare something / evaluate their menu.

Get your friend to call the host

Ask your friend who knows the host to call and ask if there is a Vegetarian option.
