A habit people expect
by: Anonymous

I did a quick fact check and found that your heart does not stop when sneezing - the sensation occurs due to the air you take in, the chest tightens, etc. "Bless you" originated many years ago from superstition. I guess bless you might be ok for me from someone I know well, otherwise it is awkward. It's almost inappropriate to invoke "God" or anything affiliated with religion. Not to mention that other people expect me to say it when they sneeze which I simply don't do. To me sneezing is no different than an involuntary burp, yawn, or even passing gas. I agree with the prior commnet that it is enough that it draws attention. Oh well...

Excuse me
by: Anonymous

When I sneeze, I immediately (and automatically) say "excuse me". For some reason, my husband is mildly irritated by that. He says that it is inappropriate to say "excuse me". How should I respond to him other than retraining myself?

GOD bless you
by: Rowy

It is because your heart stops when you sneeze. Hence, you are blessed to return to life .

I agree.

I agree. I think bless you is unnecessary, but if someone says it to you, just say thank you and probably manage a polite smile then leave it.

Pardon Me
by: Anonymous

I think the same thing. It causes too much attention when I sneeze anyway. I had rather say pardon me and forget it.
