Explain, and request
by: Boston Mom and Daughter

The previous poster makes an excellent point about the fear associated with the changes in our parents' memory as time goes by. However, I would go a bit further when responding to the children's eye-rolling and complaining. Not only would I remind them that I'm doing my best, I would also let them know that I am aware of their impatient reactions and hurt by them.

Perhaps they need a reminder of all the patience and support you provided to them during their lives.

Yes, It's hard to swap roles with a parent after a lifetime of being in the role of the child. If they're lucky enough to still have a mother around they need an attitude adjustment.

Senior Forgetfullness
by: Anonymous

I too experience "Senior Forgetfullness" I believe our children react the way they do out of fear. They feel threatened by the thought that we may be "losing it"...we are their parents and must never change. If we (who they always believed could solve every problem, be strong, be there for them when they needed us)can fail...then they aren't safe either.

Maybe it would help when they roll their eyes, to say "sorry...but I'm doing the best I can" and let it go at that. They don't intend to be mean...they just don't want to deal with it.
