Fashion may come and go, beauty may fade, but elegance is forever.

In an attempt to feel more comfortable in a more elegant crowd, I endeavored to find ways to assimilate. I didn’t think I could keep up by buying more Chanel bags, and thankfully I realized later that I didn’t have to! Elegance is so much more than beautiful things. I wanted to be like Audrey Hepburn, but I wondered how to translate old school manners and classic dressing into this modern world. I didn’t want to be like the women who looked stuck in the ’50s. This book was based on my journey about learning to be elegant without losing myself and becoming someone I’m not.

I’ve since realized that there is more to being elegant than becoming the stereotypical “elegant woman.” You can wear your own version of elegance as long as the principles of elegance remain. You don’t even have to like pearls (although they are very tasteful). This book is written for all those who feel they need more ideas for a little more elegance, confidence, and beauty. Most of all, I hope they find encouragement that they too can live a beautiful life regardless of budget or circumstances.

A Guide to Class and Refinement

We may celebrate the diminishing social class system, but genteel manners have been forgotten, with gallantry and chivalry abandoned. However, there still exists an old ruling class that continues to behave with the same values, deportment, and traditions. One can’t help but admire the dignified and respectful way they conduct their lives. Even though they may no longer have their original fortunes, they continue to live gracefully. They are a society of the finest class.

Book Description

In “Becoming a Woman of the Finest Class,” the author shows how one can acquire a similar appearance of gentility and finesse. She draws from her studies of the history of civilization, the nobility, and the aristocracy, as well as her observations of the modern elite, to explore and dissect the mysterious qualities of class.

My Comments

This book is largely an extension of my article titled “How to Be Classy.” I have four sections in the book, which I believe unlocks the understanding of how “class” came about.

The first offers a bit of history and definitions; the second is on values, which govern behavior. The third is on characteristics or class distinctions, and the fourth is on education (a non-exhaustive reference).

Why did I write the book?

The words “class” and “classy” are mysterious ones. If you talk to people from different races and cultures, they can almost always agree on who is classy or what is not classy. But if you ask each one to give a reasonable explanation, you’ll find yourself dissatisfied with the answers.

In a similar way to how I described in one of my newsletters how Kate Middleton was “elevatable” (not a real word) and positioned to marry a prince, “Becoming a Woman of the Finest Class” is all about this.

Now, I have to let you know that this is not an academic paper but my personal observations, study, and opinions of those in the finer classes over a period of 10 years. There are far more “scientific”’ studies out there, written for people who study psychology, sociology, and anthropology. I, on the other hand, wrote it for myself, simply as a person who wants to be the best she can be. This book is just one way of doing that.

My Comments

To write this book, I overhauled everything that I had ever written on how to achieve elegance, and I repeatedly questioned “how to be elegant” at every angle.

I also considered the time frame required to learn elegant ways (Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady took six weeks!). I pondered the emails and attempted to answer the most common questions. I tested theories as I tried to put myself in others’ shoes, and I sought out solutions. I finally arrived at Secrets of Elegance as my conclusion.

To make it easier, I broke the secrets down into a step-by-step process. Moreover, I don’t believe in one form of elegance. Elegance can occur in various personalized ways, as long as the underlying principles remain.

I believe that anyone who grasps these principles can then carve her own brand of elegance. It is like teaching a man how to fish. You can’t limit “elegance” to a certain set of rules, but you can recognize it. Pedigree, well-mannered, and well-brought-up children are raised in keeping with these principles.

I have tried my best to include the basics because I don’t want anyone to become overwhelmed or discouraged! Take your time, and approach the content of this book bearing in mind that the process is meant to be lifelong.

I hope this book helps you in a way that the web, with its limitations, cannot.
