Don't Do this NEW
by: Anonymous

You're not throwing yourselves a birthday party, you're throwing an extortion party for your guests.

My wife and I were invited to a birthday dinner at a very nice restaurant many years ago. After dinner was served, the hostess thanked us for celebrating her husband's birthday with them, and then let everyone know they were on the hook for diner. We were not amused. The meal was great, but I still left with a sour taste in my mouth.

Excuse me?

How should you go about this? Canceling your plans. Don't ever throw a party for yourself and ask others to pay because you're too cheap.

Guests, by definition, are not "on the hook"
by: Dandelion

Guests are never on the hook for the cost of the parties they attend. They are invited for the pleasure of their company, not to make your chosen accommodations cheaper.

If all of you are making the arrangements together and are sharing the cost, that's another matter. all parties should be given the option to be involved in decisions that affect the cost of the trip and choice of destination, lodgings, etc.

The birthday girls are not entitled to hit up people so as to be entertained in the style of their choosing.
