Elegant Birthdays & Have some cake!

Eunice's birthday cake idea

My comment: I wrote this page many years ago when Pinterest wasn’t a thing. In many of my old pages, I tried to illustrate my personal view of elegance. As the internet changed, many links/pictures became outdated & broken.. I couldn’t keep up, morever, I shifted to writing different concepts of elegance, rather than showing exactly what “an elegant cake” is. Thus, keep that in view while reading this page. Many thanks!

Hi, if you’re here for the first time, I hope you will enjoy some birthday quotes!

Divine Birthday Quotes

“The old believe everything; the middle aged suspect everything: the young know everything.” Oscar Wilde.

“It takes a long time to grow young.” Pablo Picasso

“And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” Abraham Lincoln

“A diplomat is a man who always remembers a woman’s birthday but never remembers her age.” Robert Frost. .

“The secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.” Lucille Ball

Elegant Birthday Ideas

When I was old enough to throw my own birthday party, I enjoyed thinking up and collecting ideas of how to throw an elegant birthday party. I often fantasied of the elegant parties, mainly because I wanted to wear a pretty dress that isn’t usually appropriate unless it is your birthday!

I remember all the parties I held, and a few stood out for me. Not all were particularly glamorous, but I had a lot of fond memories because of the people and friends. All were real, authentic and unpretentious!

Elegant Birthday Party #1 Local Christian Band (#supportlocal)

I was 18, and I think this was the first birthday party I held on my own. It was in a small cafe near the ocean, where there was a live band every Saturday. It was a local Christian band, (which was pretty unusual in my area) and I knew two of the band members. We met each other in Church camp. I was 15, and they were my group leader and his friend.

My friends turned up, showered me with jokes, flowers, balloons and gifts. My mother brought the cake. The band played me a birthday song. We all took photos after that. I went home and relished the meaningful birthday cards.

Point is, when I look at Instagram and watch how some celebrate their birthdays – it feels very OTT (over the top). This also applies to little kids’ birthday parties, teenagers or other events such as “guess the gender”. I’m not judging anyone, it’s wonderful to have a special day, it just feels like so much effort to me! I’m probably just lazy and a little more detached regarding this.

At the end of the day, I still looked back with fond memories. I was wearing my fav chocolate brown turtleneck sleeveless top and in jeans, had a little make up on. The best part was all my friends with me on that day. We were young, carefree and it was a great time!

Elegant Birthday Party #2 Audrey Hepburn Theme (#supportlocal)

Here is a picture of my birthday cake. I used mooncakes (an asian thing from the Lantern festival) and sparklers for candles. Then I lay them on a silver platter.

Aside from planning a somewhat elaborate party… – if you are interested, please go to my page on elegant entertaining where you’ll find more birthday photos there. (under construction for now)

I also make a point to list my personal achievements, which can sound silly to others, for instance, being more comfortable in a certain social situation, walking more regularly, getting my wardrobe reduced into half …anything that makes me feel that I’ve outgrown myself.

Usually a few months nearing to my birthday, I suddenly get a rush to complete the projects I’ve started, or tick off a ‘must do before the age of _” list just so that I can claim I’ve done that before age __!
