While e-cards are fine for inviting someone to a tupperware party or sending a thank you for some little thing that someone has done for you (taking out lunch), I feel a paper card is appropiate for thank yous for gifts. Of course this may also depend on your friends. While younger friends may think an e-card is fine, older generations most likely will not. If the person took enough time to select a gift, wrap/bag it, get a card and attend your event, the least you can do is hand write a thank you card to that person. Granted it is tiresome and tedious writing "Dear So & So, etc." Yes it is the thought that counts, but it is also the proper acknowledgement of the gift that counts too.

e-cards are appropriate for sure

Most definitely. It would be better if it was personalized and showing how much you loved their particular gift.

It is practical, instantaneous and environmentally friendly.

Obviously, it would be much lovelier to receive a physical card, but I'd much rather a thoughtful ecard with a personal message in there then a mass produced card that has nothing on it.

Also, the old adage that goes, "It is the thought that counts."
